Elvira’s autobiographical text:

I am a journalist and a writer. As a journalist I worked in – or for – some of the most important Brazilian newspapers, such as O Globo, Folha de São Paulo, O Estado de São Paulo and Jornal do Brasil. After Jornal do Brasil, I began to write in a Brazilian web site dedicated to art, literature and music: Aguarras (ISSN 1980-7767) and Etudes Lusophones, a Sorbonne IV French site dedicated to cultural studies, until 2013.
As a writer I began my carrier with children books, receiving some of the most important awards of the Brazilian publishing industry, such as the “Jabuti” (awarded by the Brazilian Chamber of Books), and the award of the São Paulo Association of Art Critics. I also received more than ten awards of the Brazilian branch of IBBY (International Board of Books for Young People). And also an award of the Noma Institute, from Japan. A text addressed to young adults, that I wrote many years ago, was published in 2013 as a graphic novel with my drawings: it’s “Vitória Valentina”, by Editora Lamparina.
But I dedicate myself to literary fiction for some time now.
“O que deu para fazer em matéria de história de amor” (“What could be done about love stories”, Companhia das Letras, 2012, 168p.) was nominee for the Prêmio São Paulo de Literatura. This book was translated to Swedish by Örjan Sjögren and published by Tranan in 2016.
“Nada a dizer” (“Nothing to say”, Companhia das Letras, 2010, 168p.) received the Literary Fiction Award from the Academia Brasileira de Letras and was published in Portugal, by Quetzal, in 2013; and in Italy by Gran Via, in 2016.
Another of my novels, “Às seis em ponto” (“At six a.m., sharp”, Companhia das Letras, 1998, 128 p.), received the City of Belo Horizonte Award. An analysis of this book with the spanish translation of some of its pages was published in “Espéculo, Revista de Estudios Literarios” (number 14, march/2000), of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
“Coisas que os homens não entendem” (“Things men don’t understand”, Companhia das Letras, 2002, 160 p.) was translated to Swedish, also by Örjan Sjögren, and published by Tranan.
“Por escrito” (“By Writing”), published in 2014, by Companhia das Letras had an excerpt published by Wasafari in English.
And “Como se estivéssemos em palimpsesto de putas” (“As if we were in a palimpsest of whores”) is to be published by Companhia das Letras in 2016.
I have a diploma in French literature from the Université de Nancy (by Alliance Française); a diploma in arts from the Fine Arts Institute of Rio de Janeiro; a masters degree in journalism from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro; and attended art classes at Parson’s School of Design, when I lived in New York in the 80’s.
